Savageã‚â® Arms Model 10t-sr Tactical Bolt-action Rifle With Threaded Barrel Review

Savage 10-TR
Vicious x-TR

It's a bit unusual to be reviewing a burglarize intended for LEO/Military audiences on a hunting website, but a LEO buddy of mine picked up this Savage and I had to endeavor it, take pictures, and review. In that location are very few of these out at that place in the wild, and I thought that some more pics and review info would exist good. So far, the reviews I've seen accept lacked comprehensive accuracy testing, which is a shame because it should be a authentication for a burglarize similar this. Why else carp with such a heavy bolt action rifle? **EDIT Oct 2014: This burglarize is now bachelor to non-LEO audiences aka: everybody!**

**Edit 2: December 2014: this rifle is starting to evidence upwards in the U.s.a. as the 10fcp-sr 5R**

What is the Brutal 10 TR?

The Savage ten-TR is a heavy barrel, precision rifle intended for Law Enforcement and Armed forces audiences. SWAT snipers, that kind of thing. Continue in mind, its price is what makes it intended for LEO/Mil; civilians are pushed more towards the other model 10s (10FP, 10FCP, etc.) At $599 from Frontier Firearms, information technology looks geared to take market share away from the $yard-$1200 Remington 700P 5R, another heavy barrel, bolt action rifle intended for the LEO marketplace. Readers, please take note that nothing on this rifle restricts or prohibits civilian ownership, it's but marketed and sold to LEO/Mil employees. Samples of these rifles may turn upwardly in the civilian market.

First Impressions of the Savage 10 TR in 308

The outset thing you lot'll probably remember picking upwards this rifle, "What a animal!" While information technology doesn't take the length and size of receiver on something like the Cruel 111 LRH in 338 Lapua, the butt is very heavy weight and it gives the rifle a lot of rigidity and meat. The rifle itself clocks in at 9lbs 2 oz (with magazine and scope base of operations, no scope). The bolt handle also looks similar it was pulled from an anti-tank rifle, and it juts out from the side of the burglarize.

Barbarous 10TR Accuracy

Mill ammo gave me some pretty bad flyers only with reloads, things are tightening upward. These groups are with 168 grain SMK's, and I'thousand at present trying out 175 grain Berger Hunting VLD's with CFE223 powder.

4 sub-MOA groups, with 3 at 1/2 MOA or less. (ignore middle group)
4 sub-MOA groups, with 3 at ane/two MOA or less. (ignore middle group, that's 17HMR)

Usability

Usability on the 10-TR is skilful, even slightly better than standard Savage rifles due to the improved commodities release location (you however have to pull the trigger and bolt release to go the bolt out though). The iii position safety is located conveniently on the tang, and the mag release is in a well forward of the magazine. That makes 1 handed magazine changes easy because mags popular into your waiting hand every bit yous depress the release with your index finger. I really similar this system and call back Savage went the incorrect way with the new Axis style magazine system that is creeping up into other rifle models.

Operating the bolt handle takes some adjusting if you're used to hunting rifles. It's too big and gets also close to low mounted scopes to grasp in your hand like a typical bolt, then yous may need to operate it using an open hand: slapping it back and forth. I know that sounds crude, only it's just as fast as grasping the handle and because how solid the rifle is, information technology doesn't move the burglarize much. It'south also more sure and offers more than leverage than if your hand is closed on the cease of the bolt handle. If you take a sparse rifle example, you may need to remove the bolt from the burglarize to send information technology, every bit the commodities handle sticks out the side pretty far.

The Stock

The Accustock is a practical, inexpensive stock for a rifle like this. It's not quite as nice as an aftermarket stock, just it's a lot ameliorate than the typical inexpensive synthetic stocks. With aluminum bedding blocks and an aluminum frame, it offers much more than rigidity than other stocks at this price betoken. Vicious besides offers the model 10 in variations with stocks from HS Precision and the like. Or, sell the stock for $100 and get an MDT HS3 aluminum chassis. The factory Accustock does let for a bit of flex near the stop, which could potentially touch the barrel if you were to really torque downwards on a bipod or push the rifle downward onto a barrier. The 2 sling studs up forepart enable use of a bipod and sling.

Accessories

The included 0 MOA, ane piece picatiny rail offers adept eyes mounting options, merely short scopes may need to be mounted loftier to get the objective cease of the scope to articulate the base of operations. Longer scopes will sit lower on the rail and make for a improve cheek weld with the factory non-adaptable stock. Some people on the cyberspace have found that their telescopic base of operations/screw holes hasn't been degreased and were loose (including mine!), while others have found the opposite case with screws that only wouldn't come out without pregnant force. Check yours before mounting a telescopic.

Since the muzzle is threaded for v/viii-24TPI, you can choose to mount a suppressor (if you tin can own them), flash hider, or cage brake. My LEO friend is looking at this small linear compensator from local Canadian company Due south&J Hardware to keep length and concussion down.

Within Canada, a great source of information on these rifles is CanadianGunNutz. There's a decent thread on these rifles here.

Summary

The nearly important affair to consider about this rifle is that information technology's essentially making a new market: reasonably priced constabulary/armed forces sniper rifles. It's half the cost of the competing Remington 700P, which is an important consideration for budget-crunched SWAT units and other groups that need a burglarize similar this.
